Simulink lets you simulate physical systems before building them. This is useful for testing systems theoretically, without needing to physically construct a test setup. It is widely used for projects, design processes, general knowledge building, and much more.
This guide tries its best to explains concepts as it goes, but if you feel your fundamental grasp of Simulink is weak, use MATLAB's many resources. Linked below is a useful set of walkthroughs covering most of the tools Simulink provides.

This guide provides a background in modeling power systems in Simulink. It walks through different simulations and how to build them. By the end, you should be able to simulate a desired power system on your own.
This guide also covers topics found in the class ECSE 2110 Electrical Energy Systems. This class can give deeper insight into some models used here but is not a necessary prerequisite. If you lack understanding, feel free to research online to form basic understanding of the models we build here.

To access the power-based components we'll be using, download the "Simscape Electrical" add-on. Thankfully, MATLAB has an easily accessible add-on setup. Press Add-Ons in the MATLAB home bar and visit the downloads page. Search for Simscape Electrical and download the add-on. Once the process finishes, you'll have access to the components we need in Simulink.
Here is a list of the Components and setup we need for this model, all of which can be found in the Library Browser. The proper setup in Simulink is also displayed below.
| Quantity | Component | Location |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Scope | Simulink → Sinks |
| 1 | Power GUI | Simscape → Electrical |
| 1 | 3-Phase Source | Simscape → Electrical → Specialized Power Systems → Sources |
| 2 | 3-Phase Series RLC Branch | Simscape → Electrical → Specialized Power Systems → Passive |
| 1 | 3-Phase V-I Measurement | Simscape → Electrical → Specialized Power Systems → Sensors and Measurement |
| 1 | GND | Simscape → Electrical → Specialized Power Systems → Ulilities |
