PSCAD stands for Power Systems Computer-Aided Design. It is a simulation software that's used to model, analyze, and visualize electrical power systems. PSCAD enables simulation of electrical circuits, visualization of waveforms, and analysis of transient and dynamic system behaviors.
PSCAD is widely used for power system stability and transient studies, high-voltage DC (HVDC) and FACTS (Flexible AC Transmission Systems) modeling, and renewable energy integration including wind, solar, and inverters. It's also valuable for protection and control system testing, microgrid and smart grid simulation, and electromagnetic interference (EMI/EMC) studies.

Confirm your PC meets the Free Edition requirements
PSCAD V5 Free Edition is intended for Windows 10 (64-bit) or Windows 11 (64-bit) and needs an internet connection at least to obtain/refresh the certificate license.
Download the installer from MyCentre (if you’re directed there)
Run the installer and complete installation
Activate licensing by logging in (certificate licensing)
When you start PSCAD, you’ll enter your MyCentre login. If you’re authorized, PSCAD will obtain a license certificate and save it to your machine (so you’re not required to be continuously online).
Before building simulations in PSCAD, it’s important to understand the layout of the interface and how to use the most common tools. This section introduces key controls and basic software navigation so you can work efficiently.
When you open PSCAD, the workspace is divided into several areas:
